Bloomberg poll: Gas prices not Obama's fault, investment, not cuts, will create jobs
    byJoan McCarter

The latest Bloomberg National Poll not only has bad news for Republicans in their war against women on the birth control front, it has some encouraging news on how the public views the economy.
First, this question on gas prices:

Gas prices have been rising in recent weeks because of tensions with Iran and concerns that Middle East supplies could be disrupted. Which of the following do you think is more to blame for price hikes: The Obama administration's energy policies; The oil companies and Middle East nations who are taking advantage of the situation to make more money.
Sixty-six percent of respondents say that it's oil company greed and price gouging by oil producing nations causing the price hike, and just 23 percent blame it on President Obama, while 11 percent weren't sure. High fuel costs do add to general pissed-offedness of the public when it comes to the state of the economy, and that general dissatisfaction can definitely contribute to Obama's general disapproval numbers. But the public is more sophisticated than Republicans think. The GOP zombie lie that Obama actually wants higher gas prices is only going to fly with the usual 23 percent of dead-enders.
The other interesting finding is one that Rep. Steny Hoyer needs to take to heart:

Which of the following approaches is more likely to be successful in growing the U.S. economy and creating jobs?: Spending cuts and tax cuts will give businesses more confidence to hire; Government investments in infrastructure, education, and alternative energy will create jobs
The margins aren't as big as with the gas prices question, but a 51 percent majority believe that the government should be spending to create jobs, as opposed to 41 percent who believe in the austerity fairy.
For Hoyer, and all the "grand bargainers" among the Democrats, now is not the time to be considering even further slashing of government spending, either politically or as smart policy while the nation's economy is stumbling towards recovery. That's especially true because those cuts would hit those who can least afford it.
