What people will never understand about internet radio

Jeff Smulyan: Emperor Has No Clothes!
    21 May, 2010 10:29:00

Then Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan, an actual broadcaster, finally said what every broadcaster knows but is afraid to say: He cautioned broadcasters about pursuing technologies that are "very cool", but not likely to be profitable.

There is a real cost to streaming. That's why none of my brethren have made any real money from it. As listening to online streaming grows, broadcasters have to foot the growing bandwidth bill.

Another point that is seldom made is that the Time Spent Listening (TSL) to Internet Radio is decreasing as smart phone penetration is increasing.

As their IPO draws near, this is not a fact that Pandora will want prospective investors to hear because it is problematic for the advertising model:

"Pandora stands out because when it first appeared in the Ando Media ranker in September of last year, it had the distinction of having the lowest TSL of any service in the ranker. In the seven months since, it has continued with that distinction, actually losing TSL every month since.

A possible explanation is the growth of mobile. Mobile user are the fastest growing segment of Pandora’s user base. It stands to reason that TSL would decline as the proportion of mobile users increases. While Pandora’s TSL was already declining before mobile users were counted, it doesn’t preclude mobile having a negative impact.

If mobile users spend less time with Pandora than computer-bound users, then the service’s TSL should continue to decline as smartphone penetration increases. That could become problematic for a service selling advertising."

The basic Pandora service is free, with most of its revenue coming from advertising, just like traditional radio stations. Users can pay more to get rid of the ads, enable unlimited listening time and more "skips" and receive higher-quality songs. Most people apparently are willing tolerate the ads. The IPO documents said 86 percent of Pandora's revenue came from advertising in its fiscal year just completed Jan. 31.

The company has lost $83.9 million since its inception and remains unprofitable, according to Friday's filing. In the first nine months of its last fiscal year, Pandora suffered a $328,000 loss on revenue of $90.1 million.

    LMAO

Good Find SX! Do you have the link for that? Thanks

p.s. thanks for posting to Tyler's news story (that guy "Randy A" is an obvious malcontent)

Unfortunately, Tyler deleted 4 of my posts calling that guy out as having an agenda . . . and now the string of posts are out of sequence and make no sense.

Edit: found the link; here it is:
