    SIRI's deal with DirecTV...

I was curious about what kind of deal that SIRI has with DirecTV....

How much does DirecTV pay SIRI to provide them with their content? What are the metrics involved? Is it per DirecTV subscriber or is it a flat fee? When is the contract with them up for renewal? Is there a possibility that SIRI could be able to negotiate a more favorable deal with them - now that Sirus and Xm have merged? If SIRI was to pull the plug on the deal with DirecTV, how many DirecTV subscribers might become Sirius/XM subscribers? How many DirecTV subscribers are getting the SIRI content for free with their DirecTV subscription and what percentage of them could be expected to become Sirius/XM subscribers if the service was turned off? It seems like there could be a surge to subscriber growth if they did this, but would it make up for the revenue lost from DirecTV?

    Inquiring minds want to know........

One positive thing about having the Sirius/XM content on DirecTV is that it exposes people to the service. If they like the service, they are more likely to get a radio in their car and become a subscriber - as they can't install the DirecTV dish on their vehicle....unless they have an RV. I still wonder how many DirecTV subscribers might become Sirius/XM subscribers, if they weren't getting the content for free with their DirecTV subscription - and if the added subscribers would make up for the loss of whatever DirecTV is paying SIRI for the content...

I suspect that DirecTV subscriber growth might be leveling off a bit now and that most of their subscribers have been exposed to the Sirius/XM content by now. If that is the case, it might be in SIRI's best interest to pull the plug on the deal with DirecTV to fuel subscriber growth - especially if the subscriber growth could generate more revenue than whatever they are presently getting from the current DirecTV deal. Many of DirecTV's subscribers live out in the boondocks and would be prime subscriber targets, as terrestrial radio content and internet access is more scarce...

Or........they could negotiate a new deal with DirecTV that would make the Sirius/XM content a premium service that a DirecTV subscriber would need to add to their package for a fee if they wanted it.

The strategy of getting people hooked and then reeling them in.....

    Speaking from experience.

It most definitely helps bring sirius xm subscribers. See my story about new years eve. I don't have a sub because I can't afford the radio, not the subscription.

Directv allows me to show off the service, to people who have cable.

A very frightening thing happened with the recent channel changes, I emailed directv why don't I get Shade 45? They took away XM Raw but didn't give me its replacement. Not only did directv not say they are working on it, they said, in a few weeks we are going to replace the channels "Sirius took away from us" with our own music channels.

    That's NOT good.

Sirius needs to keep their foot in as many doors as possible or they could be lost and forgotten. Especially with their "killer" marketing department.

I would definitely pay additional fee per month for the service, it would have to be less than a sub because it barely has 30? maybe music channels.

I have to admit it would be tough to pay for siri if directv had a free alternative.

NOTE:When I am home I can watch CNN so I don't need CNN radio, same with NFL, ESPN, Food network etc. The only service that siri offers to directv is my music. So the above statement doesn't mean I would choose a free music service in my car.

Thanks Bill for pointing that out. I should have mentioned SIRI's deal with Dish Network too. All of my same questions about the DirecTV deal also apply to the Dish Network deal too - How much is Dish Network and DirecTV paying SIRI with the current deals and how many subs could be generated if SIRI pulled the plug on these deals and would it be worth the lost revenue from whatever SIRI is now getting from them?

Dish Network offers 60 Sirius channels with many of their packages....

    These include:

They would have to lower the Direct TV fee. Today they promote it with the music channels so, whatever value they give to those channels they would have to deduct it.

Now, how many people will actually miss those channels on Direct TV ? That is why the Direct TV is a good deal for Sirius today. They probably get a lot more in royalties than to go themselves after the Direct TV customers.

If I were a marketing specialist for Sirius I wouldn't even spend money on a market study to find out how many people would get the service if it was a Direct TV premium option. Not these days anyway...

ps: I am not saying your idea is bad but I think they can leave the music channels included in the Direct TV package alone and then add a true premium SIRIUS package with all the other content Sirius offers. (not that a lot of people would pay for it knowing that they can watch Oprah and CNBC instead of just listening to them).

Why do you think the Sirius content on Direct TV is free ? Nothing is free in this life. "Free" is a word often used by marketing specialist and sales people but do you think that what you are getting is actually "Free" ? Not even terrestrial radio is "Free", you have to listen to all those commercials !

Now, Sirius has a good deal with Direct TV, why mess with it ? They get exposure, why do you think I bought my first Satellite Radio ? beause I heard the radio stations on Direct TV and I thought they were worth paying for, otherwise I would have stayed with my Ipod and terrestrial radio.
