They play the same songs every single day on the '70's channel!

Ok, so they get rid of my favorite channel, Beyond Jazz, and leave me no other modern jazz/fusion choice on either platform or online. So I am trying out the new channel line up. I used to listen to the old XM programmed 70's channel and I really liked it because there was a lot of variety and I would hear songs that I hadn't heard in years. They really had a deep playlist...

The new 70's channel plays the same songs every single day! It's just sickening that there is so much repetition! Sometimes I hear the same song twice in the same day! There is no excuse for this repetition when there are so many songs from the 70's to play. It's one thing that they play the same commercial jingles between every single song, but now I hear the same songs over and over. I started to keep track of some of the repeats for the last few days. It almost sounds like they just play the same mix tape every single day!

This BS has got to stop now! There is no excuse for this clueless repetition!!!

This is not the kind of radio I want to hear or pay for! Why do I want to pay for radio that plays the same songs and commercial jingles every single day?

Here are some examples of the sickening repetition.........

You make a great point, Demian, but I am starting to worry about you. I think you need to work for Sirius. They need more people that will put in half of your effort... and take half of their pay.

I would love to be hired to work for Sirius as a consultant to get some of my money back, but I think they are too busy laying people off.....

I am giving my research to them for free.......and losing my shirt on the stock.

Ok, I have been looking into this a little more.....

Ok, it's not just that I could buy a greatest hits of the 70's collection and throw it into my iPod and get a better listening experience without the commercial jingles, but they aren't even playing all of the chart topping hits of the 70's - they are playing just a select few over and over again! Something is fishy about this. Why do they just play a handful of the hits over and over with heavy repetition and not even touch some of the biggest hits of the '70's at all? It's one thing to avoid minor hits and rare songs, but to have such heavy repetition while avoiding tons of big hits is stupid and offers the listener no variety at all. There is no excuse for playing the same song twice in one day, let alone everyday, when there are so many big hits that they aren't playing at all. Is there some kind of payola going on with certain record labels? I am having a hard time understanding why their playlist would repeat so many hit songs over and over while avoiding certain songs all together.

I noticed that they would never play certain huge hits of the '70's. Others have too. I used this Sirius playlist search tool to verify this...

    http://www.DogstarRadio.com/search_playlist.php

There were 253 number one hits during the 70's. Here is a list of 50 that they have yet to play once! Why not at least play some of these songs instead of playing the same handful of songs over and over everyday? What are they thinking? What is going on with the program directors?

Bridge Over Troubled Water-Simon and Garfunkel
    Everything Is Beautiful-Ray Stevens
    Long and Winding Road-The Beatles

    Heart of Glass-Blondie
    Sad Eyes-Robert John
    Pop Muzik-M
    Still-The Commodores
    No More Tears-Barbra Streisand/Donna Summer

There were 78 #2 hits during the 70's. Here is a list of 22 that Sirius has yet to play on the 70's channel....

    Use Me-Bill Withers
    Dueling Banjos-Weissberg/Mandel
Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me-Elton John
One Less Bell to Answer-5th Dimension
    Fire-Pointer Sisters
    Clair-Gilbert O'Sullivan
    Yesterday Once More-Carpenters
    Superstar-Carpenters
    Hurting Each Other-Carpenters
    Rainy Days and Mondays-Carpenters

    Spanish Harlem-Aretha Franklin
    Playground In My Mind-Clint Holmes
Which Way You Goin Billy-Poppy Family
Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue-Crystal Gayle

So not only are they playing only big hits with sickening repetition, they are not even playing a variety of the big hits. There were tons of great songs during the '70's that didn't hit the top 5 or 10 too - that never ever get played. Where is the variety and the music discovery? Why would anyone want to hear the same select few songs over and over every day? Isn't that what an iPod does already. What I'm hearing is a horribly programmed iPod with a small music selection on shuffle with commercial jingles thrown in between the songs......and sometimes corny DJ's will talk over the beginning of the songs.

    This sucks!

I wonder if they are saving royalty money by having a shorter playlist. I think it is still a bit too early to fairly judge the programming. I can only assume that improvements will be coming... eventually. Cash flow will hopefully bring greater creative flow.

Am I the only one who doesn't see anything wrong with the same song playing on different days? Go flip on your local terrestrial hits station and you will hear the same song 4-5 times per day. Based on your stats above none of those songs really played on the same day.

If I wanted terrestrial radio, I wouldn't be paying for satellite radio. This isn't a today's hit channel - this is a decades channel that is supposed to encompass music from an entire decade! As for my stats, you must have not looked them over very well. They do play the same song twice in the same day often - and these are just some of the examples I documented. There are other songs that they repeat over and over too, but I only notated some of them above. I'm already living Groundhog Day with the stock going down every day - why would I want to listen to the same music mix tape everyday? Why would anyone? At least the hits music channels have new songs that they integrate into the playlist...

I wanted to show how diverse the old XM 70's channel was in comparison to the new Sirius' programmed XM channel with it's stale, shallow, repetitive playlist. I selected these songs from an actual 2005 70's on 7 XM playlist that had tons of songs on it. All of these songs were played on the old XM 70's channel in 2005. Next to the song is the year and the songs highest charted position. As you can see from the list, they played a wide variety of music from the 70's. Creative programmers obviously had a hand in the variety of what was played - as there were album cuts that never charted included. This was reflective of the time, as 70's FM radio made a lot of album tracks popular. Listening to the old XM 70's channel was like going into a time machine to the 70's and was an adventure - you never knew what song was going to play next. The new 70's channel is like watching a Time-Life infomercial for a 70's greatest hits collection over and over every day. There is no reason for that much repetition every day when there is so much music from the '70's to play. Good luck hearing these songs on the new Sirius' programmed 70's channel....
