The Four Seasons formed in 1955 in Newark. They were originally known as the Variatones and changed their name to the Four Lovers in 1956. They became the Four Seasons in 1961, taking their name from a local bowling alley. They had 31 top-40 hits, 15 top tens and five number ones (Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like A Man, Rag Doll, December 1963).

Holland toured and recorded with Carl Perkins from 1956 to 1960, then joined Johnny Cash's backup band, the Tennessee Two – which became the Tennessee Three. Holland toured and recorded with Cash until 1997 when Johnny retired from music because of failing health.

Stone joined the group in 1972 when it was known as Genesis. After two years, he was replaced by Michael Anthony. The band changed its name to Mammoth after learning there was another group named Genesis. They became Van Halen in 1974.
