The NAB's pulling out the big guns...

Moments after the NAB's attempt to derail the Sirius / Xm merger fell short, another democratic representative not concerned with high oil, a mortgage crisis, high job losses or a weak dollar has decided instead to turn his attention to a radio merger affecting less than 1 % of the US population.

Reuters reports that Rep. Edward Markey, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, said the Federal Communications Commission should go beyond requirements that FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has already proposed the agency impose on the companies.

Seemingly understanding that the merger will in fact be approved, Markey is asking for more concessions than have been agreed to already by the companies, as well as FCC Chairman Martin and Commissioner McDowell. The new push is for HD to be incorporated into all satellite radios. Mr. Markey would like to turn the United States into a Chinese state apparently, by compelling auto manufacturers to install radios of the governments choosing. There is a fundamental problem with this man and others like him running our Congress and our nation.

The people of Massachusetts should be outraged! Fortunately, it does appear that these communistic demands will not be considered in light of the fact that open access will provide the market with an opportunity to decide if it wants HD radio. We the people, do not need a government ordering us what to listen to.

Markey's been in the NAB's pocket for months now .. this isn't the first time we've heard from him on satrad, but thankfully, it'll probably be the last.

Since we already have a government that is listening to everything we are ordering! (without judicial oversight - three co-equal branches negated, 4th Ammendment assaulted, etc.). This tangent aside, I agree with you. Markey is way off base. The good news today has not affected SP yet. Hopefully tomorrow's trading will reflect that the NAB (and C3SR) have shot their last wad. Here's hoping we get more good news soon from the lady or another member of the FCC. SP has been terrible since GS slimed us.

I guess David Rehr figured it was time Markey did something to earn the 33,000 dollars the NAB gave him!

Even though Markey's and the NAB's attempt to dictate that SIRI/XM install HD radio sets in their new SATRAD receivers is patently ridiculous, the recent news items make it seem like a viable idea (and one that will further impact the merger vote). Open Access will allow mfgers to build sets with HD radio if they so desire. These media reprts seem designed to sandbag the merger and keep SP low. Rehr is thusfar dissappointed and that is good news for merger buffs. This part of the story is missing from recent articles.

I'm less inclined to think that the "media" is intentionally sand bagging the merger to depress the stock price, and feel its more that they are just sloppily reporting facts as they fall across their desks.

For the most part these are AP articles or some random reporter who was told to make a story out of X, Y, or Z. They haven't been following the merger closely, and you can't expect them to have the same level of insight that someone who has been following the merger from day one, and the industry from long before that, to have. They have "no skin in the game".

That's why I love SiriusBuzz. Between the articles (not just Tyler's) and the discussion on the boards you really get useful information and debate, not the same rehashing of useless facts that people see in these articles. And it's also more current because you got people like crfceo and Egiscodr digging through FCC filings multiple times a day.

You make some good points. The media has been sloppy. It has failed to report this key point (of high relevance to merger buffs and shareholders) in its reporting: that Rehr admits in his letter today that the FCC is intent on moving past his rock-throwing diversions and ridiculous demands and finally getting to a vote.

Before I found this site, I would google for merger news. As such, I am inclined to think that there are many who will miss this essential bit of good news.

A great deal of weight (excessive, IMHO) has been given by the press to Rep Markey's newfound position of interference. Rehr's last gasp (swan song?) has been totally missed (ignored?).

You're probably right. The media is disconnected and it is just being sloppy in its reprting.
