Artie Lange Explodes On Stern Show
Artie Lange seems to be a person that deals in extremes. Yesterday, a docile Artie slept his way through the Howard Stern Show, and today, he exploded into a rage that resulted in a physical altercation with his assistant Teddy.
It all started when Artie and Teddy had an argument in the hallway. Ever the show host, Stern brought Teddy into the studio to do an on air resolution to what Artie and Teddy were arguing about. The segment was boisterous and started out as something entertaining to listen to. It was obvious that Artie was upset, but no one could have foreseen what happened at the end of the segment.
The argument went from Teddy messing up on some assignments, to a discussion of what exactly teddy’s responsibilities were, to how much money Teddy makes as an assistant to Artie. At one point, Lange accused Teddy of stealing money from him, and being ungrateful for additional bonuses and loans that Artie had given Teddy.
Then the Flash Point.
Artie threw a glass of water across the studio, jumped over the studio console, and went right after Teddy. The studio erupted into confusion as Stern Show staffers threw themselves between the 300 pound Lange, and Teddy. Artie was so angered that he literally would have ripped off Teddy’s head had he been able to get to him. Robin was screaming, Stern was calling for control, and the sounds of a scuffle filled the airwaves.
Once settled, Howard expressed grave concern for what had transpired. Artie came back into the studio, and was still angered. At one point Lange even spoke of resigning from the show. Stern stated that the behavior exhibited by Artie was unacceptable and that informed Artie that he needs to maintain control of himself. Artie, speaking about himself said that he was not a good person, and there was no way he could guarantee that such an episode would not happen again. It was suggested that Artie leave the studio, which he did.
Lange and his assistant Teddy are both scheduled to fly to Amsterdam this evening. The status of the trip is unknown. Show staffers were expressing concern for bot Teddy as well as Artie, and efforts were made to get someone with Artie, as staffers felt that Artie was at a breaking point.
For his part, Teddy returned to the studio and spoke to Stern. Teddy said he was not going to sue, and that he had hopes that something good could come from this. Teddy at one point offered to leave the show so that the show would not suffer from a loss of Artie. Stern informed Teddy that this suggestion was not the solution.
Whether Lange returns to the Howard Stern Show is now likely up in the air. At this point it would appear that Stern wants to let the situation cool down, and will address things later. The question now is whether Lange, who clearly has a lot of ongoing issues, is in the right frame of mind to not only be a show participant, but should he even be alone, and traveling to a country where things are a bit more liberal with drugs given Artie’s current mental state.
There is concern for Artie as a person here, as well as a professional on the show, and no one knows exactly how to address it. Stern has in the past banned talent from the show because of physical altercations. On the professional side what happened today is not appropriate, and a ban should be considered. Artie has to know that being on the Stern show has catapulted his comedy career, so such a move could be financially devastating. On a personal side, there is obvious concern for Lange. No one wants to see Lange fall.
While Lange has expressed rage and hate for Teddy, it is perhaps Teddy’s actions that will be Artie’s savior. Teddy is not going after anyone, and not pressing the issue. Whether or not Lange will see this is unknown. With Lange scheduled to be away over the weekend, it may be Monday before we know any more detail.

i love artie on the stern show. and he will be sorely missed. i can’t imagine the show without him, but he REALLY needs to take some time away to fix himself. i’d rather he leave the show for a while than have him remain in his current condition and end up dead in a few months.
artie…please get your mind right.
It is time for artie to take a break from the show. He is clearly out of control. How many more excuses can one make for him? To have him repeatedly sleep on the show, not show up, and explode like this on the show. How much more evidence do howard and Sirius people need to clearly show he is ready to leap off a bridge. Clearly Artie has demons he is dealing with, but at want point due you realize he is a danger to other people. Artie is “prone” to violence, can we explain away things like that. Artie is out of control.
I thought this was a joke at first. But then I heard the replay. WOW, I hope they can fix this. Artie you gotta get on track.
Artie is a whacked out psycho that cannot lay off the booze and drugs and Howard is a bit of a two face if he doesn’t fire Atie’s sorry ass. I know all the listeners remember the AJ/Stuttering John fiasco.
Personally, this could be the lead up to one of the greatest Stern shows ever. Artie gets axed and OD’s a few days later. The talk on the airwaves would be huge – Sirius would sell another ten million units in hours!!!!
PS – Updated dead pool anyone?
Artie the greatest. I hope he decides to stay. I love the Artie eating the cupcake artwork from http://www.photofiddle.com
I hope Artie DOESN’T go to Amsterdam. I think he will be signing his death sentence if he does. Too many drugs easily accessible for him. He needs to take a break from the show and take care of himself.
artie is the man and he needs help…i hope he gets it…howard should look past it…but will sirius? we have to wait 10 days to find out…get better Art.
Weeks ago, Artie commented that he wasn’t sure what his future on the show would be after his planned USO trip to Iraq. No one picked up on that comment. Yesterday, he noted that he needed to take a physical exam prior to the trip. Perhaps this requirement and its possible effect on the USO trip, together with his personal problems, building up for two years with no successful efforts to resolve them, caused this fight with his assistant to be the excuse he has long sought–to end his work on the Stern show.
If you look at this rather unfortunate episode in context, it is clearly disturbing — but no one should be the least bit surprised.
Shit happens when people become abusive, inconsiderate and take the feelings of others for granted.
Blame can be placed on nearly everyone here up and down the line…
From Artie himself, whose actions clearly crossed the line….to Howard…who in his own inimitable way — did his best to provoke (though he certainly did not expect that he would unleash the kind of fury that resulted), to Teddy…whose disrespect would never have been tolerated in any other business situation…to the entire Gang, who had a helluva lot of laughs — some of them, perhaps a little to cruel and close to home — during the previous day’s sleeping episode.
It’s so obvious that Artie is much less thin-skinned that he’d like us to believe. Howard’s incessant provoking, Robin’s well-chosen words and all the shit from the Gang and the rest of the interns — who took such enjoyment from going over all the minutia in such extraordinary detail yesterday on the wrap-up show & Intern Show…..SET THE STAGE for today’s extraordinary outburst.
Artie will need to make some kind of commitment for getting into some treatment before Howard allows him to come back.
We all know that he needs to control his anger and be able to “Be in The Moment” mindful of the possible consequences of his actions, should he ever again become “out-of-control’.
Familiarity breeds contempt…
Listening to the show closely in the last week or so…you could clearly hear a bunch of shit building — so that there ultimately is an explosion of one sort or another. To be truly professional, people need to pay a litle more attention to each other’s feelings.
One of the reasons, the show has always enjoyed the unique status it has, is because Howard has always intuitively known how far to press an issue. But the man is only human and we all make mistakes.
I don’t think Howard would be comfortable with Artie leaving under these circumstances. Eveyone needs to grow-up a bit by themselves.
stern was doing some serious (sirius) ass covering today.. he did help create the situation and artie told him so quite clearly. accusing someone of theft on national radio is a big deal. if you are wrong, you get sued.
artie used to be great. watch him on howard tv when he first started. he was all full of energy and enthusiasm. now his gluttony in all areas of his life have made him a miserable human being and he is now miserable to listen to… he is a subpar standup and the only reason he makes so much money is the stern show..fat, high, and hostile is no way to go thru life , blutto
It’s been very clear the past couple of weeks that Artie’s demons are overtaking him. He really needs to take some time off for his sanity and safety. While I love hearing him on the show, he is obviously in a downward spiral and needs some intervention. I guess we will see what happens when the Stern show’s vacation is over. I wish Artie the best and hope someone comes to his aid.
i just hope he did not go to amsterdam.ponder on that……get well artie.
Artie is self destructive and ultimately a bad person. He attempts to cover for this by being overly generous with cash, etc. He is on a self destructive path. If Howard wants a show out of this, it could start with “Intervention” and end with “The Biggest Loser”. Granted Teddy sounds like somewhat of a screwup, but it is hard to even guage that as it was just about impossible for him to get a word in. The fact that he went after him both verbally and physically is absolutely unacceptable. Forget his resignation, in any other workplace he probably would have been arrested and terminated on the spot. Such behavior cannot be tolerated under any circumstance. To be perfectly honest, if Teddy truly is paid $42K, my first impression he is underpaid for having to put up with an abusive overweight whore mongering A-whole, who to be perfectly honest, shows by his action and words he knows he is overpaid and not really worth what he makes. He is self loathing and ashamed of himself as well he should be. F Artie, good riddance. I would rather listen to Jackie. The only difference between Artie and Crazy Alice is that Crazy Alice has come to grips with who she is.
What’s strange is they are replaying the show, they are looping the 4/07 show.
Also, no mention of it on the site today.
Artie is back on the dragon, no doubt. Howard stirred the pot one to many times and it bit him in the ass.
Just as long as they don’t bring Jackie back.
as far as not replaying the show, that’s the lawyers doing.
Artie needs to go to treatment for his anger issues. Someone will get hurt if these issues are allowed to continue. Artie is also right, he is a bad person! I understand he is good natured and very generous but he can’t control his anger which is out of control. His human system is out of control; it is filled with crappy food, illegal drugs, beers and prescription drugs. He is ready to blow or go to sleep at a minutes’ notice. I would model it like a pressure cooker ready to blow.
Howard, if he doesn’t get help he has to go. I love him too! He is GREAT! BUT, I am a stock holder and we can’t afford the risk.
he can’t handle the schedule..he loves sports and i think he is up til 11 waking at 5am. he needs a break..
I love Artie. He is really such a great personality for the show being that he is a fan first and then a show star.
Personally, I think he put himself in a quandry by joining the show and being such a fan. I can only imagine how stressful that role is since the show isn’t the same as it once was in its heyday.
I think part of his frustration is that he is on the show that used to deal with so much external conflict. They had censorship, faulty equipment, disappointing management, and many issues in terrestrial radio that made for really interesting radio.
Now they don’t have those conflicts so they create conflict in the group itself. No one wants their dirty laundry aired and discussed over and over. Artie for sure doesn’t like it and has said it over and over.
Personally, I enjoy it as I know Howard does as well. Its interesting to see how people react and then analyze the reaction.
I think Artie’s eating, smoking, lack of exercise, gambling, oversleeping, and just excessive living are his way of handling so much stess in his life. He is at rock bottom now. But he keeps avoiding dealing with the issues that just keep bubbling over.
It sounds like his personal finances are in turmoil, we can see he is not eating well, he isn’t sleeping either (sleep apnea), and he isn’t able to keep good relationships.
He needs to take a break and get his life together. I don’t think one person is to blame for this. They all just need to let Artie what Artie needs to do. Not what Artie wants to do! He needs serious therapy to get to the root of all this. He needs introspection without having that introspection broadcast to all of us.
Artie – if you read this, we are all pulling for you!
artie lange is dead
i have sirius because of my hubby now not a day goes by that i dont listen to some howard stern, i am concerned that artie will end up like chris farley or jim belushi-which is sad and a huge waste of time and life
how bad can life be that he has to behave this way..all anyone wants is for artie to take care of himself-everyone loves artie but lately it seems like he wants to be somewhere else he hardly contributes to the shows and when he does its like he is in a daze..i hope this is not the end of artie
