Paradoxically, The key to future success of Sirius is increased expenditure on sub retention through improved programming, rather than the pavlovian cost-cutting short-term remedy. There is a growing dissent among users, as reflected in many blogs and forums, since the merger. More specifically, there is a general anger in regard to cancellation of liked channels, more chatter and promos, lower quality and shallower playlists. but more than anything, Sirius disrputed the ever elusive attachment of listeners to their radio stations.
The fundamental mistake Sirius is making is assuming that the channels with the lowest ratings should be the first ones to go or to be consolidated. This is a gross misjudgement as it does not take into account the demographics of these channels' listeners. Targeting trend-setters and hipsters is what Sirius needs right now, disregarding how many of them there are, as the buzz and hype around sattelite radio seems to be all by gone since the merger. They fail to see that emotional attachent is what will hold this company above water when there are threats in the form of ipods, and soon enough, wimax.
